Roadworthy Certificate Verification in South Africa: Your Essential Guide with VerifyNow

A roadworthy certificate comes from South Africa's authorised roadworthiness testing and licensing process. VerifyNow does not provide roadworthy-certificate status, certificate authentication or issuing-authority confirmation.

What a roadworthiness test establishes

An authorised vehicle testing station examines the vehicle against the roadworthiness requirements that apply to the vehicle and transaction. The official result, certificate and licensing record must come from the responsible testing or licensing authority.

References to an MVSA, Motor Vehicle Sales Act, Motor Vehicle Security Act or Motor Vehicle Standards Act should not be treated as South African legislation. Relevant law can include the National Road Traffic Act and its regulations, together with consumer, credit, second-hand-goods or FIC Act requirements where their own scope is triggered.

Use the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the responsible provincial or municipal licensing authority for current roadworthiness procedures.

When roadworthiness evidence is needed

Requirements depend on the vehicle, transaction and licensing process. Common situations can include a transfer of ownership, registration or licensing steps, and the rules applying to public-transport or commercial vehicles.

Avoid relying on a universal twelve- or twenty-four-month renewal statement. Confirm the current requirement for the vehicle class and transaction with the responsible authority.

How to verify roadworthiness evidence

  1. Obtain the original certificate or official electronic record supplied through the authorised process.
  2. Match the vehicle identifiers with the vehicle and transaction documents.
  3. Confirm the testing station, issue information and status through the responsible licensing channel where required.
  4. Resolve discrepancies with the testing station or licensing authority.
  5. Keep the official evidence with the transaction file.

A copied certificate, number plate or vehicle specification result cannot replace authority confirmation.

What VerifyNow Vehicle Lookup returns

VerifyNow Vehicle Lookup can return available make, model, model year, VIN and related specifications for a submitted South African number plate. Use those fields to compare the vehicle in the transaction with the source result.

Vehicle Lookup does not return or confirm:

  • Roadworthy-certificate status
  • Current licence or registration standing
  • Registered owner
  • Finance or encumbrance
  • Police or stolen-vehicle status
  • Accident history
  • Transfer eligibility

A mismatch is a review trigger. It is not proof of fraud or an invalid certificate.

Use VerifyNow for the supported identity, company, bank, screening or vehicle-specification service selected by the customer. Keep roadworthiness evidence under its authority source.

FICA and automotive transactions

FIC Act customer-due-diligence duties apply where a business falls within Schedule 1. Motor dealers can fall within the high-value-goods category when the statutory item and transaction thresholds are met. That classification is separate from roadworthiness testing.

Vehicle Lookup does not complete FICA, KYC or POPIA compliance. The accountable institution remains responsible for its RMCP, customer review, records and reports.

POPIA responsibilities

Vehicle and customer files can contain personal information. The organisation remains responsible for lawful purpose, notices, access control, retention and security. Use the official Information Regulator for current security-compromise guidance.
