Assurance paths

Start with the right evidence

Assurance depends on the player journey, risk trigger and your internal controls. It is not one fixed checklist for everyone.

SA ID only

Basic player confirmation

Use a consented SA ID check when your policy accepts a core identity and age result.

SA ID verification
18+ rule from verified date of birth

Bank validation can be added later for a payout or cashless account.

ID + selfie

Bind the player to the ID

Compare a selfie with the submitted ID portrait and add passive liveness when stronger identity proof is needed.

SA ID verification
Submitted ID image and portrait extraction
Selfie comparison and passive liveness

Use when remote, higher-value or risk-triggered activity needs stronger evidence.

Slot checks into the journey

One API layer. Three useful moments.

Keep verification close to the action that needs it.

Player registration

Run a basic SA ID check or a higher-assurance selfie comparison inside your own registration experience.

Payout account

Add bank account verification before a payout when your operational controls require it.

Risk-triggered review

Step up from basic identity to face comparison when player behaviour or account risk calls for more evidence.

South African context

Licensed casino operations, FICA and player protection

The Financial Intelligence Centre lists the gambling sector under item 9 of Schedule 1. A casino operator remains responsible for its risk-based controls, customer due diligence, records and reporting. VerifyNow provides verification results that can support that process.

The National Gambling Board states that legal casino gambling requires a provincially licensed operator and an adult player. It also distinguishes casino gambling from online betting. This page does not represent general online casino gambling as lawful in South Africa.

Compliance note

Casino operators are part of the gambling sector supervised under FICA. Casino and online-betting permissions remain distinct under South African gambling law.

Practical onboarding sequence

  1. 1Choose lower or higher assurance based on the player journey and your risk policy.
  2. 2Use SA ID verification for a basic identity and age result.
  3. 3Add the identity photograph and live selfie comparison when stronger identity binding is required.
  4. 4Verify bank account details before payouts where your operational controls require it.
  5. 5Apply AML/PEP screening and ongoing controls under your RMCP and risk rules.
  6. 6Keep consent, verification results and operator decisions with the player record.
Conditional AML pack

Need to screen a customer list?

If your organisation is an accountable institution, or your RMCP calls for a customer-book review, Batch AML lets you upload 10 to 1,000 people or entities and keep one consolidated result file. It is an optional workflow based on your duties and risk controls, not a requirement for every business in this industry.

Educational guidance only. Your accountable-institution status, RMCP, customer risk rating and lawful basis determine the final checks and records you must keep.

Casino verification FAQ

Questions from casino operators

What is a lower-assurance casino player check?

A lower-assurance flow starts with a consented SA ID verification. It confirms the ID and core identity fields, and lets the operator apply its 18+ rule. A licensed casino can add bank account verification separately when a payout or cashless account requires it.

What changes in a higher-assurance flow?

A higher-assurance flow captures a player-submitted ID image, extracts its portrait, compares that portrait with a selfie and adds passive liveness. The operator can use this when remote onboarding, impersonation risk, account recovery, higher-value activity or its own risk policy calls for stronger identity binding.

Does every casino player need face matching?

No. VerifyNow checks are modular. The casino decides when a basic SA ID result is enough and when a selfie and face comparison are required. That decision belongs in the operator’s risk-based controls and customer journey.

Are casino operators accountable institutions under FICA?

The FIC lists the gambling sector under item 9 of Schedule 1. Licensed casino operators must apply the FIC Act duties relevant to their business, including risk-based customer due diligence, records and regulatory reporting. VerifyNow supplies verification results and evidence; the operator remains responsible for its programme and decisions.

Does this page promote online casino gambling in South Africa?

No. The National Gambling Board distinguishes licensed casino gambling from licensed online betting and states that general online gambling is prohibited except for online betting through licensed South African bookmakers. This page covers player-registration and account workflows for licensed casino operations.

Build the assurance level your player flow needs.

Start with SA ID verification. Add face comparison or bank validation only when the journey calls for it.
