How to Check Your Driver's License Online in South Africa

You can check the information stored on a South African driver's licence by scanning the PDF417 barcode on the back of the card. VerifyNow's Driver's Licence Verification service reads that barcode and returns the encoded ID number, licence number, vehicle categories, restrictions, issue dates and expiry date.

The decoder is available in the authenticated VerifyNow dashboard. The current price appears on the VerifyNow pricing page. VerifyNow uses the card image only to process the request and does not store the licence photo or extracted portrait.

Developers can use the Driver's Licence Verification API with a base64 back-of-card image or the complete PDF417 payload. The API returns structured licence, identity, category, validation and portrait fields.

What This Online Driver's Licence Check Covers

The barcode report reads the data stored on the physical card. Its checks cover the complete PDF417 payload, SA ID format and checksum, birth-date agreement and the expiry date encoded when the card was issued.

Two additional reports use the ID number and portrait extracted from the same barcode. Barcode + ID Verification compares the ID number, surname, initials and date of birth with the returned South African identity record. Barcode + Face Match compares the embedded low-resolution portrait with the Real-Time Home Affairs ID photo.

How to Scan a South African Driver's Licence Barcode

  1. Sign in to VerifyNow.
  2. Open Driver's Licence Verification.
  3. Upload a clear photo of the back of the licence or use your device camera.
  4. Keep the full PDF417 barcode visible from edge to edge.
  5. Review the decoded fields and barcode checks.
  6. Download the authenticated PDF when you need a report for your records.

A straight photo with even light gives the scanner the best chance of capturing the complete barcode. Glare across the black bars can interrupt a scan. A dark surface around the card helps the camera hold focus.

Information Returned by the Driver's Licence Decoder

The PDF417 result can return:

  • Surname and initials
  • South African ID number
  • Date of birth and gender
  • Driver's licence number and issue number
  • Licence country and ID country
  • Valid-from and valid-to dates
  • Driver restrictions
  • Professional Driving Permit category and expiry, when encoded
  • Vehicle categories such as A, A1, B, C1, EB and EC
  • First-issue dates and vehicle restrictions for each category
  • Card format version
  • Low-resolution portrait decoded from the card barcode

Some fields can be empty because the card did not encode a value. VerifyNow shows those entries as “Not encoded” so the report remains easy to read.

PDF417 Barcode and ID Checks

The decoder runs checks on the returned payload. It validates the barcode structure, confirms the 13-digit SA ID format, runs the ID checksum and compares the encoded date of birth with the ID number. It also identifies whether the encoded licence expiry date has passed.

These checks measure the consistency of the barcode data. Physical security features such as holograms and card materials need visual document inspection. An official database query can be added as a separate identity verification step when your workflow needs it.

Can the Scan Return the Licence Portrait?

The barcode can contain a small, low-resolution portrait. VerifyNow renders it on the result screen and places it inside the authenticated PDF. The user does not need to download a separate portrait file.

The Real-Time Face Match report sends the rendered licence portrait and decoded SA ID number through the selected identity-photo comparison workflow after the user confirms authority and the required privacy notice.

Authenticated Driver's Licence PDF Report

After a successful decode, choose Authenticated PDF on the result screen. VerifyNow generates the PDF inside an authenticated session and adds a report verification code. The report keeps the licence fields, vehicle categories, integrity checks and scope together in one file.

Privacy and POPIA Handling

A driver's licence contains personal information. Capture the card for a defined business purpose, tell the licence holder how the data will be used and keep the result only for the required period. Access to the decoder and PDF download is authenticated.

The uploaded card photo stays in the browser while VerifyNow's driver's licence scanner reads the barcode. VerifyNow processes the decoded barcode data within its hosted workflow.

Common Questions

Can I check whether a South African driver's licence has expired online?

Yes. The decoder reads the valid-to date stored in the PDF417 barcode and marks the encoded date as current or expired.

Does SA ID Basic compare the licence portrait?

SA ID Basic compares the decoded ID number, surname, initials and date of birth with the returned identity record. Choose Barcode + Face Match when the report needs a Real-Time Home Affairs photo comparison.

Which South African driver's licences are supported?

VerifyNow supports the issued v1 and v2 PDF417 barcode formats used on South African driver's licence cards.

Can I use a phone camera?

Yes. Use the camera option in the dashboard and fill most of the frame with the barcode. Keep the card still under even light.

Is there a sample report?

Yes. The licence verification service page includes a fictional sample with the same field layout used by the dashboard report.
