How to Check Your Municipal Account in South Africa

Municipal balances, statements, billing history and payment status come from the municipality responsible for the property or service account. VerifyNow does not retrieve municipal-account information.

Identify the responsible municipality

Use the municipality shown on the account, rates statement or service agreement. Each municipality operates its own registration, authentication, billing and dispute process.

For example, City of Johannesburg customers should use the official City of Johannesburg service channels. Customers elsewhere should locate the official municipal website or contact centre through South African Government services.

How to check the account online

Open the official municipal website.
Find the billing, utilities or customer-account service.
Register or sign in using the municipality's required customer and account information.
Review the current balance, statement, payment history and notices.
Download or save the official statement needed for the transaction.
Contact the municipality if the account, owner, address or payment allocation appears incorrect.

Avoid links supplied through unsolicited messages. Confirm the domain and payment destination before entering account credentials or making a payment.

Online and assisted channels

Online access can provide statements and payment options at any time. Municipal contact centres and service offices remain important for account disputes, ownership changes, meter queries and customers who cannot access the online service.

Keep the municipal reference number and copies of supporting documents when logging a dispute.

Municipal accounts and FICA

Checking an ordinary municipal balance is not a FIC Act customer-due-diligence requirement. A municipal statement may be used as address evidence where an accountable institution's RMCP accepts it. The institution remains responsible for assessing the document and applying its risk-based process.

FICA does not make an overdue municipal payment a suspicious transaction or require VerifyNow to monitor municipal accounts.
